An epic location in the Scottish Highlands
The Hollow Mountain
The Hollow Mountain
Cruachan is one of Great Britain’s most unique power stations with its kilometre-long tunnel that was drilled and blasted out of solid granite, and houses the turbines.
Trek up to the mighty Cruachan Dam and reservoir that sit on the slopes of the mountain. The two possible routes to the dam both offer magnificent views across Loch Awe and the highlands.
Enjoy lochside views and the wildlife that inhabits the area, with ospreys and the odd pine marten known to make appearances around the Visitor Centre. Inside guests of all ages can find out about electricity and the history of the power station.
If you’re anywhere near Loch Awe, the Cruachan Power Station is a must. Can’t believe it was built in the early 1960’s. An epic piece of Scottish engineering. Tea Room is also excellent.
A very interesting place to visit. Amazing feat of engineering. The cafe is very good, friendly staff & good value. A visit to Cruachan is recommended.
Lovely visitor centre. Great for coffee, cake or a bite of lunch and a lovely wee gift shop for souvenirs.
